Whatever you tune up a mountain bike to use, try to remove as much of the gunk from the chain as possible, since a clean chain will be noticeably more efficient and easier to shift. Ideally, you'll clean all the visible surfaces of the chain, as well as the inner rollers and other non-visible bits.
The latter parts are the most important, but the mountsin to take care of, unfortunately.
If you are serious, you can purchase a chain cleaning device that clamps onto the chain and brushes at the chain while you pedal, or even completely remove the chain to soak and shake in a bottle of solvent. Whatever approach you take, get the chain as clean as you can, then dry it off and oil it up with a light oil like Triflow. OP explained his rationale, so now I'm picking up what he's putting down. Since it's a new bike, things are breaking in and need readjusted.
One big thing is that cables will stretch and need readjusted a few times before biike finally settle in. Bolts and screws can loosen and need checked, stuff like that.
